Antique Brass Makeover of Two Thrift Shop Finds
March 29, 2023
I picked up this brass wall pocket at a local thrift shop recently for $2.
It once had a shiny brass finish, but now is worn and tarnished.

Here is a close up of the wall pocket.
I found this metal pineapple finial at the same thrift store a couple years ago. It was already painted white.
A January project from the Homeroad blog with Vintage Brass Candlestick makeovers with Rub N Buff inspired my projects.
After washing the wall pocket with hot soapy water and a rag, I brushed on Rust-Oleum Protective Enamel Paint in Flat Black.
The paint dries very flat and sticks very well. It is an oil based paint.
Since the pineapple finial was already painted or primed in white paint, I used Dixie Belle Chalk Paint in Caviar to base coat it.
Next I pulled out Gold Leaf Rub N Buff.
This is a cheap paint brush I found at Dollar Tree.
I will throw it away after applying the Rub N Buff wax.
I squeezed some of the Gold Leaf wax out onto a newspaper and rubbed the brush into it.
I tried to apply it lightly at first and added more as needed.
I wanted areas of black to show through.
I then applied the gold leaf wax to the pineapple finial.
I really like how it turned out.
And here is the wall pocket.
Perfect for faux foliage.
I have a lot of black paint and gold leaf wax left for many more projects!
Give it a try on some thrifted metal finds!
I am keeping the pineapple finial for sure.
Pin for later!
Thanks for visiting.

Those look great. I love rub n buff. I have used it on different curtain rods to make them all match in a room, on a wall-mounted coat rack, frames.. it's a neat product. I was glad you used a brush, many times I see bloggers using their fingers. It is not good to be absorbed into the skin! I even find I have to use it in a ventilated area.
ReplyDeleteGreat makeover, those items really stand out now.
