Thrifted Finds Upcycled For Christmas

December 15, 2023

Photo of a wooden basket and small wooden sled.
The wooden basket on the left was found at a garage sale, and the miniature sled at Goodwill. Each cost $4.

I transformed the items with paint, stencils, napkin decoupage!

I have had a lot going on this year, and my blog posting has definitely been sporadic.

First, I got a new puppy in March. The puppy proved to be difficult to potty train, and required a lot of my time and supervision.

Next, my oldest daughter was married in September, and I was busy with both pre-wedding and wedding festivities.

And sadly, I lost my mom in November at 92, after a brief illness. We are so lucky she had a long and healthy life.

I hope to share a few more Christmas projects this week and next.

After giving the wood basket a good cleaning, I brushed on a couple of coats of Dixie Belle Chalk Paint in Drop Cloth.

I received this awesome Old Sign Stencils Tree Seedling Stencil last month.

I hope to finish a project next week with the whole stencil, but for today, I am sharing a makeover with a part of the stencil.

I try to find multiple ways to use each of my Old Sign Stencils.  I especially like to use them on thrift shop finds!

The script portion of the stencil happened to fit perfectly on the end of my wooden basket.

I centered it, taped it in place, and swirled on the stencil using Fusion Mineral Paint in Ash.

See what I mean?  It fit perfectly.

3D Christmas Seedling Tree Stenciled Sign from Funky Junk Interiors.
This 3D Christmas sign was created by Donna Williams of Old Sign Stencils and Funky Junk Interiors.  Her detailed tutorial can be found HERE.  Her creativity is truly amazing!

*Old Sign Stencils has provided me with complimentary samples. All opinions about these fabulous stencils are my own.

The basket is perfect for displaying little faux trees at Christmas.

I waxed the chalk paint with Dixie Belle's Best Dang Wax in Clear and a rag.

I then moved on to the little wooden sled.

I sanded the painted areas smooth with my Ryobi Compact Detail Sander.

For the sled decoration, I decided to try a new (new to me) decoupage technique.

I used one IHR Tartan Paper Napkin.  (I will use the rest as napkins at Christmas time.)

I peeled the napkin plies apart, leaving just the top sheet.

Photo of Fusion Ultra Grip on a paper plate prior to decoupage.
Instead of using Mod Podge, I used Fusion Ultra Grip.  Two coats. Then allowed the Ultra Grip to dry thoroughly.

I had some on hand for use on shiny furniture finishes.

I found this technique on the Homeroad blog HERE.

The napkin was placed on top of the sled's seat.

A piece of non-waxed freezer paper  (parchment paper works too) was placed on top of the napkin, and ironed onto the sled's seat.

I was careful not to move the napkin.  The Ultra Grip becomes sticky with the hot (cotton setting) iron.  The iron keeps the napkin from getting any wrinkles.

The overlapping napkin was removed along the edge with sandpaper.

I protected the napkin seat with clear matte spray acrylic sealer.  I think you could use clear brush on poly as well.

I then waxed the whole sled with Best Dang Wax in Clear and replaced the jute rope.

The sled can be used on a table or shelf or hung on the wall.

The sled is also adorable tucked into my stenciled seedling basket!

I love container vignettes!

  1. Congratulations on your daughter's marriage and the new puppy. I am sorry that your mother passed away. You're in my thoughts.

  2. Once again, another win Carlene! Love how you teamed up the crate and trees to the perfectly sized stencil. What you make always seems like it's been like that all along. SO professional! And I completely understand living in a busy season. You generally create at such a high volume I could never begin to achieve. Sorry for the passing of your Mom, but I hope you're kind to yourself over the holiday season. You deserve it! Merry Christmas!
