Junk Garden Galvanized Bucket Planter Ideas
February 21, 2024
As winter winds down, it's time to think about flower gardening! Do you have enough galvanized buckets for planting?
Galvanized buckets are my favorite rustic outdoor planter.

I never purchase new buckets. I like them with a great old patina.
I get most of my buckets from garage sales, thrift shops and consignment stores. Antique stores can charge a pretty penny for pails.
I ALWAYS drill drainage holes in the bottom of my buckets. They are now planters! Most years I leave them outside with dirt inside them in harsh Minnesota winters.
Then I add a little fresh potting soil and they are good to go another season.
This bucket is planted with orange lantanas and zinnias and sits on top of a rustic stool in my flower border.
Here I threw out the plastic hanging flower basket, added a little dirt, and plunked a Kmart geranium mix inside. (I miss Kmart's summer garden department)
This was another plastic hanging basket of Swingtime Fuchsias that I planted in a bucket, along with a creeping golden Jenny filler plant.
A hook has been screwed into my soffit. The bucket hangs from an S hook and chain.
A galvanized bucket is a perfect planter to add to a junky vignette like this one by my sister in law.
Angel wing begonias are planted in another bucket in this junky red themed deck vignette.
Here my sister in law once again uses galvanized buckets in this rusty wagon vignette.
Galvanized buckets on an old bench are displayed with some of my galvanized watering cans on the deck.
Last year my flower border featured an 8' long bench with 5 planted buckets.
Lots of color!
Small galvanized buckets are fun little planters too.
One of my most popular blog posts featured a small galvanized lobelia bucket hung in an old square frame from from a tree.
A vintage wooden swing hung from the deck railing holds a small bucket of Diascia.
An old industrial dolly holds deck railing/wire pot holders with more galvanized planters of Diascias.
I love vintage galvanized mop buckets too!
They can be displayed in a junky vignette alone,
Or in a grouping of mop buckets with succulents on the deck,
When I want to add some height and interest to my pansy oak barrel planters, I add a bucket or buckets inside the barrel.
Here a fern bucket adds height to a barrel with fuchsias.
Galvanized minnow buckets and their inserts also work as planters in the junk garden.
Most of my buckets are not painted, but once in while I give them a makeover.
Here two buckets are painted in mustard paint and stenciled with a Dollar Tree stencil.
This old bucket was painted in red milk paint and stenciled with a garden stencil from Old Sign Stencils.
A buffalo checked minnow bucket stenciled with Old Sign Stencils.
This bucket was already painted red when I purchased it so I just added a farm style decor transfer to the bucket front.
This painted bucket with botanical decor transfer holds a fern in a vintage bird cage!
I love grouping my buckets on the deck.
I hope you enjoyed my buckets!
