Thrift Store Hinged Box Spring Makeover
March 13, 2024
I found this long, skinny, wooden, hinged box at our local thrift shop last week. I paid $3 for it. I think it must have been a pencil box or paint brush box, maybe? The glossy red paint was in very chippy condition.
The shape and size of the box gave me an idea. Scroll on to see this box getting a makeover, and also check out more projects from the Thrift Store Decor Team's March blog party!
The inside had not been painted at all.
I wasn't sure how old the box was so I checked it for lead paint with a lead paint test kit. The kit has a lot of cotton swabs to check more old finds too.
I used my Ryobi Detail Sander to remove most of the red paint.
The box had a pattern on the outside.
I painted the inside of the box with Dixie Belle Boss just in case the stain would bleed through my chalk paint.
I painted both the inside and outside of the box with Dixie Belle Chalk Paint in Dried Sage.
I found a bag of styrofoam filled, colorful, speckled eggs originally from Kmart in my craft stash.
I brushed two coats of Dixie Belle Chalk Paint in Fluff on the eggs.
The eggs had holes in the bottoms that slid over toothpicks. The styrofoam cone was perfect for drying my eggs.
Next I pulled out my Redesign With Prima Botanical Paradise Middy Decor Transfers. I decided that the smaller transfers would work on my eggs.
I rubbed on the florals with the rectangular stick included in the transfer package, and waxed the eggs with Dixie Belle Best Dang Wax in Clear.
I also used part of a Dollar Tree rub on transfer.
I centered the transfer on the inside of the cover, and rubbed it on. I painted the metal hardware with Metallics Accents Paint in Rose Gold.
I waxed the box inside and outside with Best Dang Wax in Clear.
Here is the finished box.
I left the outside plain.
After filling the bottom of the box with brown paper shreds from Dollar Tree, I added my eggs.
I think the display would work as both Easter and spring decor.
It was a very easy project.
